Getting to Milano - original version
Motivation
This use case shows the added value of collecting a broad set of information around traffic, of integrating it and of using it to support a citizen that has to go to Milano from another city in Lombardy region.
Preconditions
- All relevant source of information are known when the citizen uses the system, but data can be obtained at execution time.
- Citizens are recorded in the Milano Urban Computing System (MUCS), they authorized UCS to notify them information sending SMS to their mobile phone.
- Some integrated business model among the various actor is in place.
Story board
Carlo is a citizen leaving in Varese 60 KM North-West of Milano
Carlo has to go to the Lombardy Region premises in via Taramelli, 20; he arranged a meeting at 11.00 for 25.9.2008
- The day before the meeting he enters MUCS and open the "plan a travel" service
- Carlo fills in the required data
- FROM: via Luigi Sacco, 1 Varese
- WHEN: after 8.00 - 25.9.2008
- TO: via Taramelli, 20 Milano
- WHEN: before 11.00 - 25.9.2008
- USING: private car
MUCS performs as Google Maps does today and give the resulting driving directions, but instead of saying that such a travel requires 49 minutes, MUCS explains Carlo that he should leave home after 9.00 (when the usual commuters traffic on A8 is almost over)
- MUCS also asks Carlo if he wants to be inform via SMS about traffic conditions and possible alternative driving directions
- Carlo agrees and exits MUCS
- The day after (25.9.2008) an accident involving multiple vehicles take place at 8.15 on A8
- MUCS estimates that an accident of such kind will result in a congestion of A8 until 10.00, therefore it checks if any planned travel is at risk. It finds Carlo's travel.
- MUCS checks if Carlo can take an alternative drive, but no alternatives are found that allow Carlo to get to Milano in time for its meeting.
- MUCS checks if Carlo can take public transportation instead. It founds some alternatives:
- Using Ferrovie Nord Milano + Passante + Metro M3
- Walk from Via Sacco, 1 Varese to Varese Casbeno train station, it takes 7 minutes
Railroad LeNord: 8.39 Varese Casbeno - 10.03 Milano Piazza Repubblica
- Metro M3: Repubblica - Zara, every 5 minutes and takes 3 minutes (Repubblica is the name of the metro station colocated with the train station di Milano Piazza Repubblica)
- Walk from Zara to Via Taramelli, 20, it takes 5 minutes
- Using Ferrovie dello Stato + M3
- Walk from Via Sacco, 1 Varese to Varese Stato train station, it takes 12 minutes
Railroad Ferrovie dello Stato: 8:43 Varese Stato - 9.55 Milano Piazza Repubblica
- Metro M3: Repubblica - Zara, every 5 minutes and takes 3 minutes (Repubblica is the name of the metro station colocated with the train station di Milano Piazza Repubblica)
- Walk from Zara to Via Taramelli, 20, it takes 5 minutes
- Using Ferrovie Nord Milano + Passante + Metro M3
- MUCS sends an SMS to Carlo informing him that a accident is holding up A8 and he is better using a public transportation; two itineraries have been already prepared for him
- Carlo enters the MUCS service and checks the two alternatives. He chooses the first one and uses the ticket-less option to by the train ticket.
Note from Siemens: after having got the notification message at 8:15 (a few minutes delay is also imaginable) Carlos has only very limited time. He has to leave home in exactly 17 minutes if considering 7 min taken to arrive at the train station. As the previous plan suggests a starting time after 9 o’clock, he might be having breakfast in home dress with slippers at 8.15. Then he has to manage everything very quickly and run.
Story board(Extended)
- MUCS may handle several information sources
- Weather data through the route
- Nearest gas station including the price of gas
- Real time traffice congestion status on top of historical traffic congestion statistics
- Personal information for the meeting including other participants email, cellular, and location
- Historic and tourist attaction point
- Emergency policy for infrastructure including flooding, poison gas leakage, avalanche, etc
- Possible scenario with extended information sources
- MUCS estimate the total travel time considering weather condition of the day
- MUCS predit the remaining time for the destination while driving with real time traffic status
- MUCS recommend the cheapest or the nearist gas station if Calro need refuel
- MUCS ask Calro if he/she want to let other participants know the same information he/she received. (like weather condition or traffic accident, or may be late for the meeting)
- MUCS automatically connect to other relevant system for quick resolution. (like fire station or hospital)
- MUCS let know Calro other paticipants location if they are very close in distance
- MUCS inform Calro the upcoming historic/tourist place while driving if Calro's preference is met
