1. Travel
Useful facts about Berlin are available at Wikitravel. For information about current events, tickets etc. see Berlin tourist information.
1.1. To Berlin
Excellent information how to get to Berlin is contained in the Get in section of Berlin's Wikitravel page.
by air: Airports Berlin-Tegel (TXL) or Berlin-Schoenefeld (SXF)
- by rail: Major train stations are Berlin Hauptbahnhof or Suedbahnhof
1.2. Within Berlin
Berlin is big, especially since there is more than one downtown area. Berlin has 12 boroughs or districts, called Bezirke, and each borough has its distinctive style. Each Bezirk is sub-divided into several Kieze—a Berlin term referring to "neighbourhood," each again with its unique style. A short description and map of most districts is available on Wikitravel. The plenary meeting venue (MPI-B institute) is located in Dahlem/Zehlendorf, near the border to Wilmersdorf (Google map).
Berlin's Get around section on Wikitravel.
Public transport site: BVG.de:
- The same tickets are valid for the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses.
- There are no barriers, but tickets must be validated by stamping them prior to boarding a train.
MPI-B is located in the district Dahlem/Zehlendorf (Lentzeallee 94), along the U3 line near the U-Bahn station Breitenbachplatz.
2. Venue: The MPI-B institute
MPI-B institute address:
Max Planck Institute for Human Development (German: "Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung", hence MPI-B)
Lentzeallee 94
14195 Berlin, GermanyLocation: MPI-B (Google map) is located in the SW-part of Berlin (between the districts of Zehlendorf and Wilmersdorf), about a 40-min ride from the city center (Berlin-Mitte)
U-Bahn station Breitenbachplatz, U3 line.
3. Accommodation
See attachment LarKC_BerlinPlenary_Accomodation.pdf (2009-07-02, 70.7 KB) for more detailed information.
3.1. Harnack-Haus
The closest and cheapest option for staying in Berlin to visit our institute is to stay at the guesthouse of the Harnack-Haus. We had reservations for 20 single rooms (69.50 Euro/night) and 10 double rooms (115.19 Euro, or 93.30 Euro if used as single room). However, these reservations were only guaranteed until Friday, August 28th 2009.
Update [Sept. 3rd]: We understand that there have been some issues with booking the Harnack-Haus. Please contact info@harnackhaus-berlin.mpg.de or Sylvaine von Franque (vfranque@mpib-berlin.mpg.de) in case you are not sure whether your reservation has been accepted, or in case you first tried to make a reservation but now have made alternative plans.
The Harnack-Haus is 'MPG-owned' but operated independently from our institute (MPI-B).
3.1.1. Address
The contact details of the Harnack-Haus are:
Max-Planck-Gesellschaft
Tagungsstätte Harnack-Haus
Ihnestraße 16-20
14195 Berlin
Reservations: +49 (0)30 84 13 38 04
Telephone: +49 (0)30 84 13 38 00
Telefax: +49 (0)30 84 13 38 01
E-mail: info@harnackhaus-berlin.mpg.de
Online form at http://www.harnackhaus-berlin.mpg.de/eng-reservierung.htm
IMPORTANT: Please enter "MPG LarKC Plenary" as your "reason for stay" into the online registration form.
The main advantages of staying at the Harnack-Haus are its price and close proximity to our institute (3 stops on the U-Bahn, 30 mins walking). The downside of it (and our institute's location) is that Berlin's city-center is about a 40-min ride (by bus, U- or S-Bahn) away. We have been looking for suitable hotels during the plenary meeting and realized that several simultaneous fairs in the city will make it challenging to find good deals.
Please refer to Sylvaine von Franque ( vfranque@mpib-berlin.mpg.de ) in case of any questions regarding the Harnack-Haus bookings.
3.1.2. More detailed location information:
Harnack-Haus is located near the Max-Planck Institute (MPI-B) and Free University (FU) buildings.
